Subject: Omaha H/L8 model TOURNAMENT PLAY recommendations.

Im treating the Omaha H/L8 model TOURNAMENT PLAY recommendations below as a work in progress. Youll note that each time that you review it; Ill have made some type of new modification.

I review it from time to time as I review Hand History. If I note an effective move; Ill attempt to calculate if this move has a positive percentage expectation. If so, Ill make a note and try to articulate such action in the Model.

This is not a very pure method; as it is more observational without empirical data. Thus, on one day; I may think something is great; and, after further review; I modify my thought pattern and make adjustments.

And, as you play; if you see the positive percentage expectation move, you should either send me a suggestion or post such suggestion on the dkblue board. Every person in the dkblue group is encouraged to comment. This model should continue to grow and flow as our experience adds insight to more profitable poker play.

Omaha H/L8 model TOURNAMENT PLAY recommendations

GAMBLE UP AND WIN: with good starting hands pre-flop by playing more aggressively and betting and/or raising at least 1-unit. You play better than the average player by selectively playing good starting hands. You must maximize the value of good starting hands by increasing the return through getting more money in the pot pre-flop. You must be able to recognize a good starting hand from a poor starting hand based on your table position. You should review and have knowledge of the 10-player hand values. (Its not important that you memorize the hands; only that you recognize what makes the hand valuable. Go down the first 100 hands and ask yourself this question. Does this hand have an ACE AND does it have high and low possibilities? Then ask; how high is the high and how low is the low? Then ask; how does the hand fit together? When you start thinking that way; its easy to find the good starting hands. Then; it is simply a matter of using PATIENCE AND DISCIPLINE (p&d). However, you must also be willing to mix it up pre-flop; especially when the blinds are low. (You can take a look at the flop for a single unit $20-$40 bet with decent table position.) The return on investment when a semi-rag hand hits can be significant. And, this type of action will cause your play to be rated as unpredictable.

MANAGE: your chip count by the use of RHYTHM. You must be able to switch to aggressive play and back to tight play as your chip count dictates. When low chipped you must be willing to gamble up with sub-standard albeit decent hands to get back into contention. Then, you must switch back to solid play for chip maintenance once your chip count has balanced back into contention. You must mix up your play and be able to turn your aggression up or down a notch during the heat of battle. Understand the cockroach play style selection mode of ultra-tight play with periods of exceptional pre-flop aggression based on key starting hands. (The cockroach method is to just play the top 100 hands aggressively pre-flop. Fold all other hands.)

BET INTO: passive players. Passive players should be played more aggressively to exploit their lack of gamble. You dont want to give a passive player a chance to get started in the hand.

LET GO: of the bone when you encounter pressured raises with weak starting hands. Adjust this rule against a super-aggressive player or when you play heads-up on the final table. (Some aggressive players raise every hand in heads-up and in pre-final and final table play. If you play only great hands; youll be blinded off. You cannot allow yourself to be outplayed by aggression. Sometimes you just must gamble up.)

ENTER MORE: pots by adjusting and lowering your normal starting hand values against super aggressive players and table bullies as the blinds increase. Attempt to isolate such players with good starting hands that also have a high over pair. During low blind periods; you should attempt to trap this type of player. Call more single bet raises in your big blind. Many marginal hands can call a single raise due to pot odds. And, when you catch a marginal hand in the blind; youll kill those pocket AAs.
